Most developers don’t like to mess with Sysadmin-fu. However, it’s something one cannot escape, especially when using OSS tools, like Ruby, Rails, Apache, Nginx, Linux, et al. This talk focuses on what a developer should have set up and available in his/her dev environment; and what he/she should not.

This talk is instructional and opinionated. It clearly outlines what a Ruby developer’s local environment should look like. Furthermore, it showcases current Best Practices™ with their respective pros and cons. At the end of the talk, the audience should have a better grasp of what’s available for them, what tools to use, what tools not to use, and be able to update his/hers development environment to match this talk.
